Root says ‘no-one will remember’ Australian Ashes digs
England cricket captain Joe Root has played down the significance of the on-field verbal spats that took place during the recent Ashes series against Australia.
Root, whose team lost the Ashes 4-0, said that “no-one will remember” the sledging and banter that occurred between the two sides.
“It’s part and parcel of the game, and I don’t think it will have any lasting impact,” Root said in a post-match press conference.
The Ashes series was marked by several heated moments, including a confrontation between Australia’s Tim Paine and England’s Ben Stokes.
Despite the aggressive tactics employed by both teams, Root insisted that the spirit of the game was not tarnished.
“At the end of the day, it’s just a game of cricket,” Root added. “We have to move on and focus on our next series.”
Root’s comments come after criticism from former England players, who suggested that the team’s conduct during the Ashes was unbecoming.
However, Root defended his players, saying that they were simply trying to compete at the highest level.
“Nobody goes out there with the intention of causing trouble,” Root said. “We’re all professionals, and we know where to draw the line.”
England will now turn their attention to the upcoming Test series against the West Indies, which is set to begin in April.
